The land of Varanasi (Kashi) has been the ultimate pilgrimage spot for Hindus for ages. Often referred to as Benares, Varanasi is the oldest living city in the world. These few lines by Mark Twain say it all: "Benaras is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together". » Chandraprabha Sanctuary
 

Chandraprabha Wildlife Sanctuary is situated 70 kilometers Southeast of the cultural city of Varanasi. It can be plainly established that Chandraprabha is one of the less known and neglected wildlife sanctuary of India. Nevertheless is the best place around Varanasi to break the monotony. The place is a strict no-no for the "Karma-chameleons" but if all those talks about 'Karma' and 'Nimit Matra' have started taking toll on your otherwise nascent brain, then Chandraprabha is a place to be.

 
» Chunargarh

Chunargarh is located just 45 odd kilometers from Varanasi and falls in Mirzapur district. The city has a very deep historical importance because of the Chunar Fort that stands just off the town. It is said that Maharaja Vikramaditya, the king of Ujjain established the fort of Chunar as back as 56 BC. King Sahdeo who also built a stone umbrella like cenotaph inside the fort in order to commemorate his victory over 52 different rulers later inhabited it.

 
» Vindhyachal

There is a concept of Shaktipeeth in India. Shaktipeeth are actually places where the Goddess of power or the female part of power is supposed to be residing. The female part of Power has been named Shakti and is worshiped in the form of Goddess Durga. Situated at the distance of 90 Km from Varanasi, Vindhyachal is famous for its temples namely Vindhyavasini, Asthbhuja and Kalikhoh.

 
» Jaunpur  

 Jaunpur is a bustling town 58 kilometers from Varanasi. The place has a great architectural relevance. There are some beautiful mosques that were built in a unique style that is part Islamic and part Hindu and Jain. Founded by Feroze Shah Tughlaq in 1360 on an ancient site, Jaunpur became the capital of the independent Muslim Sharqui kingdom. The most impressive mosques were constructed between 1394 and 1478.

» Shri Kashi Vishwanath Mandir
 

Also known as the Golden Temple, it is dedicated to Lord shiva, the presiding deity of the city. Varanasi is Said to be the point at which the first jyotirlinga, the fiery pillar of light by which shiva manifested has supremacy over others gods, broke through the Earth’s crust and flared towards the heavens. More than the Gaths and even the Ganga, the Shivalinga installed in the temple remains the devotional focus of Varanasi.

 
» Kashi Vidya Peeth
 

The Kashi Vidyapeeth was set up in 1920 by Babu Shiv Prasad Gupta to provide alternate education arrangement discarding that of the British. It soon became a centre of natoinal education with Hindi as the medium of instruction. Acharya Narendradev, Babu Sampurnanand, Babu Sriprakash & many more Luminaries of the time have been associated with this institute.

There are some very interesting museums within the city of Varanasi, displaying all kinds of artefacts from bygone days, often of a religious nature. Archaeological musuem Sarnath open 09:30 am.- 5 pm. Friday clossed. Ramnager fort musuem, open 10 am.-5 pm. Clossed on Friday. Bharat Kala Bhawan B.H.U. open 10:30 am.- 4 pm. Clossed on Sundays & university holidays. Archaeological musuem, Sampurnanand Sanskrit University open 10 am. – 5 pm. Clossed on Sunday & university holidays.

 
» Maharaja Banaras Vidya Mandir Museum, Ramnager
 

Maharaja Banaras Vidya Mandir Museum is located at Fort Ramnagar in Varanasi.The museum was established in the year 1964.Previouly the building of the museum was the palace of Maharaja of Benaras.The museum contains various types of objects including weapons, manuscripts, palanquins, astronomical clock, paintings etc. The pictorial depiction of Dussehra celebrations and Ram Leela and a textile woven with ivory are worth mentioning. The museum remains closed on Moharram and Vijaya Dashami.

» Bharat Mata Temple

The Bharat Mata temple is the only temple dedicated to Mother India. The Bharat Mata temple was built by Babu Shiv Prasad Gupt in the Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth. This temple was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi in 1936. The statute of Bharat Mata is built in marble and is a replica of undivided India.
