Standing almost 30 m above the city of Jaisalmer is the Jaisalmer fort. The fort is also known as the Sonar Quila. This is because standing against the backdrop of the desert with its golden sand, the fort looks straight out of a fairy tale. Sonar Quila of Jaisalmer is a massive complex comprising of a palace, various security sources, the havelis of rich merchants, several temples and the residential complexes of the armies and traders. The golden city of "Jaisalmer" lies deep in the heart of Thar Desert bordering Pakistan in the west of Rajasthan. » Jaisalmer's Legendary Tales

According to myth, Lord Krishna, the head of Yadav Clan, foretold Arjuna that a remote descendant of the Yadav Clan would build his kingdom at the top of Trikuta Hills. His divination was fulfilled in 1156 A.D. When the Rawal Jaisal, a descendant of the Yadav Clan and a Bhatti Rajput, abandoned his fort at Lodhruva and founded a new capital Jaisalmer, nestled on the top of Trikuta Hills in Rajasthan.

 
» The Falling of the Valor and Pride

In around 13th century "Ala-ud-Din Khilji" the emperor of Delhi, mounted an expedition to Jaisalmer to retrieve treasures, which the Battis had taken from a caravan train en-route to the imperial capital. He laid blockade the Jaisalmer Fort for nearly 9 long years. When the Bhatti Rajputs saw that the defeat was inevitable, it was decided to declare the Jahur act, after which the gallant women of Rajputana started committing self immolation, burning themselves to the flames, while the Rajput warriors donned saffron robes and rode out to certain deaths.

» Jaisalmer Havelis - Architectural Mansion of Merchants
 

The Patwon Ji ki Haveli is an interesting piece of Architecture and is the most important among the havelis in Jaisalmer. This is precisely because of two things, first that it was the first haveli erected in Jaisalmer and second, that it is not a single haveli but a cluster of 5 small havelis. The first among these havelis was commissioned and constructed in the year 1805 by Guman Chand Patwa and is the biggest and the most ostentatious. It is believed that Patwa was a rich man and was a renowned trader of his time. He could afford and thus ordered the construction of separate stories for each of his 5 sons.
