Standing
almost 30 m
above the city
of Jaisalmer is
the Jaisalmer
fort. The fort
is also known as
the Sonar Quila.
This is because
standing against
the backdrop of
the desert with
its golden sand,
the fort looks
straight out of
a fairy tale.
Sonar Quila of
Jaisalmer is a
massive complex
comprising of a
palace, various
security
sources, the
havelis of rich
merchants,
several temples
and the
residential
complexes of the
armies and
traders. During
the reign of the
Bhatti Rajputs,
the Merchant
community
acquired great
deal of power.

Jaisalmer's
Legendary
Tales
According
to
myth,
Lord
Krishna,
the
head
of
Yadav
Clan,
foretold
Arjuna
that
a
remote
descendant
of
the
Yadav
Clan
would
build
his
kingdom
at
the
top
of
Trikuta
Hills.
His
divination
was
fulfilled
in
1156
A.D.
When
the
Rawal
Jaisal,
a
descendant
of
the
Yadav
Clan
and
a
Bhatti
Rajput,
abandoned
his
fort
at
Lodhruva
and
founded
a
new
capital
Jaisalmer,
nestled
on
the
top
of
Trikuta
Hills
in

The Falling
of the Valor
and Pride
In
around
13th
century
"Ala-ud-Din
Khilji"
the
emperor
of
Delhi,
mounted
an
expedition
to
Jaisalmer
to
retrieve
treasures,
which
the
Battis
had
taken
from
a
caravan
train
en-route
to
the
imperial
capital.
He
laid
blockade
the
Jaisalmer
Fort
for
nearly
9
long
years.
When
the
Bhatti
Rajputs
saw
that
the
defeat
was
inevitable,
it
was
decided
to
declare
the
Jahur
act,
after
which
the
gallant
women
of
Rajputana
started
committing
self
immolation,
burning
themselves
to
the
flames,
while
the
Rajput
warriors
donned
saffron
robes
and
rode
out
to
certain
deaths.

Jaisalmer
Havelis -
Architectural
Mansion of
Merchants
The
Patwon Ji ki
Haveli is an
interesting
piece of
Architecture
and is the
most
important
among the
havelis in
Jaisalmer.
This is
precisely
because of
two things,
first that
it was the
first haveli
erected in
Jaisalmer
and second,
that it is
not a single
haveli but a
cluster of 5
small
havelis. The
first among
these
havelis was
commissioned
and
constructed
in the year
1805 by
Guman Chand
Patwa and is
the biggest
and the most
ostentatious.
It is
believed
that Patwa
was a rich
man and was
a renowned
trader of
his time. He
could afford
and thus
ordered the
construction
of separate
stories for
each of his
5 sons.
