Bikaner Camel Festival, Bikaner - Fairs and Festivals in
India no wonder is
incredible. I am just back from Bikaner and what a splendid place it
is. I was there to see the not much talked about Camel Festival. And
the moment I landed in Bikaner I realized why it is not much talked
about festival. Apart from a few banners, there was hardly anything
that will tell you that Bikaner is hosting a festival.
The number of banners was so low that I could count them on my
fingers. One at the RTDC Dhola Maru Hotel, the 2nd at the Bikaner
Notary, third I saw when I was on my way to Deshnok to visit the Karni
Mata Temple and perhaps a couple more. Full Stop.
With such half-hearted promotion how can one think of getting the
numbers that Rajasthan tourism wishes to get to. The festival was
spread across three days from January 10 to January 12.
The first day was the Karni Singh Stadium at the centre of the Bikaner
city. In fact it was the half day event. The real events started
taking place around 2:30 pm, with the camel dance competition. There
were just three real events, the other two were Camel Decoration and
Milking the Camel.
The last section of the festival was dedicated to Ms. Mewan and Mr.
Bikaner competition. Had they been executed well, they would have been
fantastic. But both events inadvertently took so long that one felt
like yawning and walking away. There were close to 20 contestants for
Ms. Mewan event and that too with two rounds.
The next section of the festival was to start at 7 pm. I took a lazy
walk to the hotel and thought of coming back in the evening. Harping
on what I saw, I realized perhaps why the event was not marketed well.
Fear of failure. How could can claim to host ‘Camel Festival’ with
less than a dozen camels.
The cultural programs in the evening did lift the soul and I felt
relieved and relaxed. It was an amazing spectacle of cultural heritage
of Rajasthan. Despite the chill, spectators were rooted to their
seats. There is so much in just one state, I thought. India indeed is
The camel dance is something that enthralls all visitors who come to
Camel Festival. The trainers train their camels very skillfully and
they present a very fine synchronization of footwork. This is one
event that leaves everyone almost breathless. To see camels dancing
together to drumbeats and music is truly an awe-inspiring incident.
The dancing shadows of the camels on the golden sands of the desert
against the setting sun is truly a picture perfect moment. It is sure
to bedazzle you when you come to visit this beautiful festival of
Rajasthan. The handicrafts and curios stalls are the best places to
shop for small souvenirs and knick-knacks. One of the most popular and
sought after events of Rajasthan, the Camel Festival attracts lots of
visitors from not just India but also the rest of the world.
