Calicut, also known as Kozhikode is a district in the state of Kerala
with a rich history that dates back to thousands of years even before
the Christian era began. The city came into prominence in the World
History after Portuguese traveler Vasco Da Gama landed on the
Kappakkadavu Beach in this city on his discovery of the sea route from
Europe to India. The district formed a part of Ancient Indian History
during the Sangam age when it was ruled by the earlier Chera rulers.
However no history of the city is available after this Chera rule till
the 9th Century AD when the second Chera rule came into prominence

There are a lot of places to visit and enjoy in this city, which
attracts large number of tourist each year. The city has many temples,
the most important of which include the Tali Temple, Trivannur temple,
Azhakodi temple, Varakkal temple, Bilathikulam temple and the
Bhairagimadom temple. During festivals a large number of dance
performances which include Koothu, Kathakali, Ottanthullal and
Kaikottikal are performed in these temples. The dances and the
architectures in the temple show the culture of the state. The city
also houses a large number of Churches and mosques. Important among
them include Catholic Church, Mother of God Church, St Mary’s Church,
Jami Mosque, and Mishkal Masjid to name a few.
The backwaters here are a unique feature as backwaters are not found
anywhere else in the world except Kerala. The backwaters are a network
of canals, estuaries, deltas, and rivers that drains into the Arabian
Sea. One can also visit places of tourist interest like Lighthouse,
Pazhassiraja Museum, Thusharagiri waterfalls, Pookot Lake, Bird
Sanctuary, Dolphin’s Point, and the Lion’s Park.
It is one of the most attractive beaches in the city and has taken an
important place in the history of the world. It is in this beach that
the Portuguese Navigator Vasco Da Gama landed on his discovery of the
sea route from Europe to India. This beach is also known as Kappad
Beach and is only 16 km from the railway station.
It is a beautiful museum under the State Archaeological Department and
consists of ancient coins, models of temples, mural paintings, antique
bronzes, dolmenoid cists and other items of archeological importance.
There is a beautiful art gallery adjacent to the museum which displays
paintings of renowned artists from Kerala.
Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary
This sanctuary is the home to about 100 species of resident and 60
species of migratory birds. The sanctuary is surrounded by hillocks
and spreads over an area of 3 km at an altitude of 200m above sea

The Thali Temple
This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is an ancient temple dating
back to the Zamorin rule. This temple was destroyed by Tipu Sultan and
Hyder Ali. However the temple was renovated in the 18th Century and
includes shrines of Ganapati, Narasimha and Saasta.
It is a beautiful place located about a few minutes from the city
where one can see dolphin’s playing in the sea in the early morning.
The Beypore beach in Beypore is located around 11 kilometers from this
place and is a commercial center also. The beach is famous for its
ship-building center and has remained one for centuries. The Arabs
still prefer to come to Beypore for buying large boats and ships. This
place is famous for its ancient style of martial arts known as 'Kalaripayattu'.

Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary
Kadalundi bird sanctuary is located around 19 kilometers from
Kozhikode. This sanctuary houses a variety of native birds. During the
migrating season one can find over 50 species of migratory birds
flocking over here in large numbers.
Kappad beach is a beach that has much historical significance. Vasco
da Gama landed on this beach on the 27th of May, hence finding a sea
route to India. The beach is well maintained and worth the visit.
Lakkidi is a beautiful hill-station that is located at the top of
Thamaraserri Ghat pass, which is 700 meters above sea level. The

The Lokanarkavu Bhagavati Temple is a temple that is dedicated to
Goddess Durga. There are two adjacent shrines that are dedicated to
Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. The temple is often mentioned in the
traditional ballads of Kerala.
The Thikkoti lighthouse is located off the Moodadi coast. This
lighthouse was constructed after a shipwreck took place due to the "Velliyamkallu",
a huge boulder that is dreaded by sailors. The area around this rock
is a resting point for migratory birds.
The Thusharagiri waterfalls are nestled cozily in the hilly regions of
the Western Ghats. The gurgling waters that cascade down the mountains

The Wayanad wildlife sanctuary is located adjoining the protected area
