Built around a hillock, Thrissur enjoys the distinction of being the cultural capital of Kerala, highlighted by the tourism department of Kerala. It is located in the central region of Karala and is replete with a rich history and culture. The name of Thrissur has been derived from 'Tiru-shiva-perur' or the town with the name of Lord Shiva (the Destroyer in the Hindu Holy Trinity of Creator-Preserver-Destroyer).

With its rich history, cultural heritage and archaeological wealth, Thrissur is called the Cultural Capital of Kerala. Thrissur pooram, a two century old festival celebrated with all pomp and splendor in the month of April/May, is the greatest attraction of Thrissur. The Guruvayoor Temple and the St. Thomas Chruch at Kodungalloore gives a religious recognition to Thrissur.

Once the capital of the State of Cochin, it has been ruled by the Zamorins of Calicut, the Portuguese and the Dutch. The reins of control have also been held by Tipu Sultan and Raja Ravi Verma, who is referred to as Sakthan Thampuran, or the architect of the town.

The district is divided into three regions: the highlands, the midlands and the lowlands. The highlands in the eastern portion comprise of densely forested hills and widespread ravines. The lush and expansive paddy fields along with the network of rivers and canals form the midlands or the plains.

The 50km long narrow stretch of coastline comprises the lowlands. Thrissur gets its water mainly from four rivers: the Bharatapuzha, Keecheri, Karuvannur and Chalakudy.
